Umberto Boccioni

Umberto Boccioni

Italian painter and sculptor. Born in Reggio Calabria, he moved to Rome in 1901 and studied under Balla. After traveling to Paris, Russia, and other places, he settled in Milan in 1907. During this period, he painted modern industrial cities using divisionist techniques (such as "Factory at Porta Romana" in 1908). He also leaned towards Secessionist symbolism and Munch's expressionism. In 1910, he signed the "Futurist Painters Manifesto" with Marinetti and others, and became a central figure in the Futurist movement theoretically. In his energetic production following "The Rising City" (1910, Museum of Modern Art, New York), he pursued the proposition of layered space with many surfaces and the spatial consistency of form and environment. From 1911, he began producing sculptures ("Single Forms in Continuity of Space" 1913, Museum of Modern Art, Milan). He also wrote many papers, including the "Futurist Sculptural Technical Manifesto." He served in the military for 15 years, and died unexpectedly in Verona the following year.
