...In the 20th century, intensive agriculture was carried out through drainage, soil improvement, land exchanges and divisions. Recently, regional development policies have led to the development of labor-intensive industries in Drachten and Heerenveen, with Drachten becoming the state's second largest city. The central lowlands, from Dokkum in the northeast to Staveren in the southwest, are peat bogs and dotted with many lakes and ponds.
