The Great Bungo-Choshu Rebellion

Japanese:
The Great Bungo-Choshu Rebellion
A peasant uprising occurred in the Choshu domain during the Edo period. It is also known as the Tenpo Great Rebellion, and was the catalyst for the Tenpo Reforms of the domain. In 1829, the domain established a product exchange office and took measures to place peasant commercial crops under domain control, but in 1831 a conflict arose between peasants and privileged government merchants, triggering an uprising that spread from the Seto Inland Sea coast to the Sea of Japan coast. The rebels, estimated to have numbered 100,000 to 130,000, demanded the elimination of control over product distribution, a reduction in annual taxes, and reforms to village administration. The domain responded by abolishing the product exchange office and the monopoly system, but sporadic uprisings have occurred since then.
