Doran - Doran

Japanese:
Doran - Doran

A type of bag. It is said that the name originated in the early Edo period when the name was given to a gunpowder pouch called a hayagou used by foot soldiers with rifles. Later, doran were used as tobacco and coin purses. They were small rectangular leather products, but they became larger and became portable items that could hold anything, and were called large doran. Towards the end of the Edo period, under the influence of Buddhist thought, killing four-legged animals was considered immoral, and materials such as wood, thin wood, Korean willow, and woven cloth were used to make doran. In the Meiji period, influenced by foreign cultures, bags began to attract attention, and handbags were called te-doran, and those worn on the shoulder were called kabuton-doran.

They are usually made of tinplate, 40 to 50 centimeters long, and shaped like an egg cylinder or an elliptical cone. Many are gray or green on the outside and painted white inside to prevent small plants from getting lost, but some have one end of the inside divided into small compartments where small plants and moss can be placed. They are convenient for carrying back live specimens collected in the field, but they have drawbacks such as a small capacity compared to their external size, so nowadays people often use plastic bags or waterproof cloth instead.
