It is the capital of the province of the same name in the region of Sicily in southern Italy. It has a population of 62,850 (1990). It is located almost in the center of Sicily, at an altitude of 588m. There are many remains of Greek tombs in the vicinity, and it was once known as a center of sulfur production, but in the early 20th century, it declined due to competition with the United States, and now most of the mines are abandoned and there is no manufacturing industry to speak of. Agriculture in this region has been poor due to inadequate irrigation, and since the 19th century, many immigrants have come to the region, making it the least developed region in Sicily.
