...North China, especially Inner Mongolia, was also an important location for the war against the Soviet Union. The Chinese Nationalist government led by Chiang Kai-shek adopted a policy of first wiping out the Communist forces and then attacking Japan, and was compromising toward Japanese aggression. However, the Chinese Communist Party advocated a united front against Japan, and a movement for an end to the civil war and united resistance to Japan spread among the people. In response, Japan tried to impose Hirota's three principles on China: Japan-China alliance, recognition of Manchukuo, and joint defense against Communism. However, with the progress of national unification by the Nationalist government and the rise of the anti-Japanese and national salvation movement, the civil war was stopped at the end of 1936 with the Xi'an Incident.
