Coastal levee

There are two types of levees: those that prevent seawater from entering and flooding in inland areas with low ground elevation, such as zero-meter zones, and those that prevent seawater from entering and coastal destruction in emergencies such as high tides, high waves, and tsunamis, regardless of the inland ground elevation. However, nowadays, both are used to refer to levees that are made of concrete or earthen dams completely covered with concrete or asphalt to be able to respond to emergencies. Depending on the size of the land area to be acquired, the shape of the levees can be upright or sloped with a front slope of about 1:1 to 2, but the front levees foot must be reinforced.

ゼロメートル地帯など内陸部の地盤高の低い地帯に対して、海水の浸入や氾濫(はんらん)を防ぐための堤防をさす場合と、内陸地盤高によらず、高潮、高波、津波などの非常時に際し、海水の浸入や海岸欠壊を防止するための堤防をさす場合とがある。しかし、現今では両者を含めて、非常の際に対処できるように、コンクリートもしくは土堰堤(えんてい)をコンクリートやアスファルトで完全に被覆した堤防をいう。防潮堤の形状は敷地取得面積の大小により、直立型か、前面勾配(こうばい)が1対1～2程度の傾斜堤となる場合とがあるが、前面堤脚部を強固にする必要がある。
