Grimoald

Dagobert I established a sub-kingdom for the eastern division of the country with the nobles as guardians, and suppressed their discontent. With the death of Dagobert I (638), the heyday of the dynasty, which had lasted for two generations under his father, came to an end, the Grand Duchy of Tolosa was established in Aquitania, and in the eastern division, Grimoald, the son of Pepin I, took real power through his position as mayor of the palace. Taking advantage of the crisis in the eastern division caused by the failure of the eastern policy, Grimoald carried out a coup d'état to expel Dagobert II and install his own son Hildebert (656), but this first attempt by a noble family was thwarted by the forces protecting the gypse (tribe) of the dynasty, and Pepin's family retreated.
