Metoikoi (Greek: Metoikoi)

Japanese: メトイコイ - めといこい(英語表記)metoikoi ギリシア語
Metoikoi (Greek: Metoikoi)
Foreigners in ancient Greece. Singular: metoikos. The word means "migrant" or "one who lives with the citizens." The status of foreigners existed in many poleis in the classical Greek world, but the situation is best understood in Athens. The oldest known example is the word "metaoikos" on a tomb inscription excavated at Kerameikos in the late 6th century BCE. Foreigners in Athens were different from ordinary foreigners (xenoi), and their lives and property were protected by national law, but they remained outside the framework of the citizens and were under their control.
