This Shingon Buddhist temple was located in Fushimi Ward, Kyoto City. In 851 (Jinju 1), Prince Korehito (later Emperor Seiwa) and his maternal grandfather Fujiwara no Yoshifusa built it in collaboration with Kukai's disciple Shinga for the protection of the prince. It was originally called Kasho-ji Saiin, but in 862 (Jogan 4) it was renamed Jokan-ji and became independent from Kasho-ji. It had a vast collection of buildings and temples, and boasted a growing power that surpassed that of its main temple, Kasho-ji, but it fell into disuse with the decline of the regent family. In the Hokke Reijo-ki (1686), it is called Sumizome-ji. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
