[Born] Around 400 B.C.
[Died] 330 BC. Ecbatana. Ancient Macedonian soldier. Born of aristocratic descent, he served under Philip II and was sent to Asia Minor in 336 BC to prepare for the Asian expedition. In the confusion following the murder of Philip, he supported Alexander III (the Great), and during the Achaemenid conquest of Persia, he played an active role as deputy commander in chief of the left wing. When Alexander continued to advance eastward, he remained in Ecbatana as a liaison, but was killed along with his son Philotas in a conspiracy.
