A semi-independent Islamic dynasty (c. 990-1096) that ruled over Jazira, Iraq, and northern Syria. Its capital was Mosul. It was founded by Muhammad (c. 990-1096) of the Uqayri tribe, who took advantage of the decline of the Hamdanid dynasty to seize real power in Mosul. At first it was under the suzerainty of the Buyid dynasty and followed Shiite doctrine, but later it concluded a treaty with the Seljuk dynasty to defend northern Syria. It later reneged on this treaty and allied with the Fatimid dynasty of Egypt, and was annexed to the Seljuk territory in 1096, losing its independence.
