An old town in Kurihara County, located in the middle reaches of the Hitasako River in northern Miyagi Prefecture. Masaka, the town in the center, is a small commercial center along the Tome Highway and the commercial center of the surrounding rural areas. In April 2005, it merged with the towns of Tsukidate, Wakayagi, Kurikoma, Takashimizu, Semine, Uguisuzawa, Kanari, Shibahime, and Hanayama in Kurihara County to become a city. 87.58 km2 . 9,425 people (2003).
