A record of the contents and outcome of inquiries made by the Muromachi Shogunate. Two volumes in total. One is the record of the Shogunate magistrate Iio Mototsura in 1490 (Entoku 2), and the other is the record of Mototsura's grandson and fellow Shogunate magistrate Iio Takatsura from 1539 to 1547 (Tenbun 8 to 16). The latter contains many copies of letters of opinion written by the Shogunate's right-hand man and others in response to the Shogun's inquiries. The "shiji" system was established in the late Muromachi period when the previous litigation system, the "hikitsuke" system, had become a mere formality, and it was a procedure in which the shogunate's magistrates would submit the results of deliberations on litigation and other matters to the shogun for his approval. Although the main subject of the shiji was litigation, it also broadly extended to general government affairs, and it is said to have been a system suited to the movement for the shogun's personal discretion, which had been extremely strengthened in form, regardless of substance, since the sixth shogun, Ashikaga Yoshinori (reigned 1429-41).
