Azuma clan - Touji

Japanese: 東氏 - とううじ
Azuma clan - Touji
A medieval and early modern samurai family from Shimousa. A branch of the Taira clan, the Chiba clan. Their ancestor was Rokuro-dayu Taneyori, the sixth son of Chiba Tsunetane. Azuma Taneyori served Josaimon-in (the daughter of Emperor Toba, Moshi), and ruled over Azuma Manor in Katori County, Shimousa Province, and called himself the Azuma clan. He pledged himself to disciple with the monk Mongaku of Jingo-ji Temple, and when Minamoto no Yoritomo raised an army (1180), he defeated the Mokudai of Shimousa Province together with Naritane, the son of his eldest brother Tanemasa. In 1185 (Bun'ei 1), his father bestowed the Misaki Manor that had been given to his father Tsunetane by Yoritomo. Taneyori's son Shigetane was a poet who served the third shogun, Minamoto no Sanetomo, and was known as "the unrivaled attendant." His son Taneyuki (Sosen) became the son-in-law of Fujiwara no Tameie (son of Fujiwara no Teika) and was famous as a poet of the Nijo school.
