1846‐1919
Dutch politician and labor movement leader. He studied theology in his native Amsterdam and became a Lutheran pastor. In 1879, he founded the magazine Recht voor Allen and retired from the clergy. He became secretary-general (1882-87) of the Social Democratic Union (SDB), which was established in 1881, and also founded the Union for Universal Suffrage. He was charged with a crime for an article in the above-mentioned magazine (written by a different person) and imprisoned for a year. After his release, he traveled abroad and visited Engels, Kautsky, and others. He worked with Bebel and Liebknecht to organize the International Socialist Congress in Paris (1889).

オランダの政治家で，労働運動の指導者。生地アムステルダムで神学を修め，ルター派牧師となる。1879年《万人の権利Recht voor Allen》誌を創刊して聖職から退く。81年成立した社会民主同盟(SDB)の書記長(1882‐87)となり，また普通選挙同盟を結成。上掲誌の記事(筆者は別の人)により罪に問われ，1年間投獄され，釈放後の国外旅行でエンゲルス，カウツキーなどを訪問した。ベーベル，リープクネヒトと協力してパリで国際社会主義者大会(1889)を開催。
