Brunton compass

Japanese: ブラントンコンパス（英語表記）Brunton compass

A small surveying and angle measuring instrument that compactly combines a magnet, bubble level, mirror, sight, and plumb line, and was created by DW Brunton (1849-1927), a surveyor for the United States Geological Survey. The Brunton Compass is a product name, and its common name is the pocket transit level. It can also be attached to a tripod, and is used for route mapping and surveying in geological surveys inside mines. As it also has the function of a clinometer, it can be used to directly measure not only strata, but also joint surfaces, fault surfaces, and various line structures found in rocks in general, in the field.

磁石，気泡水準器，鏡，照尺，錘をコンパクトに組み合わせた小型の測量･測角器具で，アメリカの地質調査所の測量技師ブラントンD.W.Brunton(1849‐1927)によって作られた。ブラントンコンパスは商品名で，一般名はポケットトランシットレベルともいう。三脚にとりつけることも可能で，ルートマッピングや坑内の地質調査の際の測量に使用する。クリノメーターの機能をそなえているので，地層面のみならず，岩石一般にみられる節理面，断層面，各種の線構造を野外で直接的に計測することができる。
