A Greek word meaning "production" or "poetry". The word "poetics", derived from the adjective form poiētikē of poiēsis, is usually translated as "poetics", but "poiētikē technē" or "poiētikē epistēmē" literally means "knowledge of production" or "theory of production", and has a broader meaning than poetics. In the Symposium (205 BC), Plato defined poiēsis in a broad sense as "all causes that bring form into being from the formless", and called craftsmen and craftsmen involved in all kinds of work based on various technical knowledge "poiētēs", and in a narrower sense, "those involved in literature and music" as poiētēs.
