Art historian. Born in Tokyo. Graduated from the College of Letters of Tokyo Imperial University in 1913 (Taisho 2), and then majored in Western art history at the graduate school. Became a professor at Gakushuin in 1920, studied in Europe the following year, and returned to Japan in 1951. In 1935 (Showa 10), he transferred from Tohoku Imperial University to Tokyo Imperial University, where he became an associate professor and then a professor, eventually retiring in 1948. He also took up the paintbrush himself, and was friends with artists such as Yasui Sotaro, and was also active as a critic. His books include "A Tour of Western Art Museums," "An Introduction to Art," and "Greek Scissors."
