Photographer and painter. Born in Luxembourg, he emigrated to the United States in 1881. He aspired to be a painter, but later pursued graphic design and photography. In 1900, he met Stieglitz, a leader who led American photography in a new direction, and was greatly influenced by him. In 1902, he became a founding member of the Photo-Secession, which was organized by Stieglitz, and participated in the art movement. He introduced the work of contemporary European artists such as Matisse, Picasso, and Brancusi at his New York gallery. His early works were rich in painterly colors, using techniques such as platinum, carbon, and calotype, but after World War I, he took sharp fashion photographs as a photographer for Vogue magazine from 1923. In 1947, he became director of the photography department at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and in 1955 he planned and organized the exhibition The Family of Man.
