1872‐1959 Norwegian novelist. He wrote The Great Hunger (1916), moving from Ibsen-style social criticism to criticism of the modern development of the mechanical industry. However, his literary talents are best seen in his narrative novels depicting the lives of farmers and fishermen in northern Norway, such as The Last Viking (1921), My Family (1924), and especially The Seaside People (1929). These vividly depict the poverty of Norway and the bitter despair of those who emigrated to the Americas. [Mori Mitsuya] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
