The world's largest stock exchange, located on Wall Street at the southern tip of Manhattan Island in New York City, USA. It accounts for 80% of the annual share of stock trading among the top 10 exchanges in the United States, and plays a central role in the American financial market. Its history is long, dating back to 1791, in the late 18th century, when securities trading became popular, when New York securities dealers began trading at the Tontine Coffee House. In 1817, the prototype of the current stock exchange was created, with securities brokers as members. It is a corporate organization of members made up of individuals, and its members include commission brokers who handle trustee trading, specialists who trade specific stocks, and registered traders who specialize in proprietary trading on the trading floor. In September 2001, trading was suspended for four days due to the September 11 terrorist attacks in the United States. In September 2008, the stock market recorded the largest stock price crash in history amid the global financial crisis that began in the United States. 米国ニューヨーク市マンハッタン島南端，ウォール街にある世界最大の証券取引所。年間の株式売買のシェアは全米10取引所の８割を占めており，米国金融市場の中核的機能を果たす。その歴史は古く，証券取引が盛んになった18世紀後半の1791年，ニューヨークの証券業者が〈トンティン・コーヒーハウス〉で取引を行うようになったのが起源とされる。1817年には証券ブローカーを会員として現在の取引所の原型ができ上がった。個人からなる会員制の法人組織で，会員には受託売買のコミッション・ブローカー，特定銘柄を取引するスペシャリスト，立会場内で自己勘定による取引を専門に行うレジスタード・トレーダーなどがいる。2001年９月米国同時多発テロ事件で４日間取引を停止した。2008年９月米国発の世界金融危機のなかで史上最大の株価暴落を記録した。上場会社数は約2800社（2008年現在）。東京証券取引所／ニューヨーク金融市場／ロンドン株式取引所
