Japanese: カイドウ(海棠) - カイドウ

Also known as Hanakaidou. A deciduous shrub of the Rosaceae family native to China. It is used as a flowering tree in gardens and bonsai. The branches are purple, and the twigs sometimes become thorny. The leaves are elliptical to oblong, hard, and have shallow sawtooth edges. Beautiful red, semi-double flowers bloom slightly drooping and half-open in April and May. The fruit is spherical, 6 to 10 mm in diameter, with the calyx remaining at the tip, and ripens yellow to dark reddish brown in autumn. A closely related species is Mikaidou (also known as Nagasaki apple), which has lighter flower coloring than this species and is also native to China. The flower stalk is short, and the fruit is large and edible. This species was formerly called Beigao.
