1798‐1866 Italian politician. In his youth he aspired to be a painter and writer, and was also Manzoni's son-in-law. From the 1840s he was involved in the unification movement as a moderate liberal, aiming for Italian unification centered on the Kingdom of Sardinia. After the defeat at Novara in 1849, he served as Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Sardinia, and in the peace treaty with Austria he defended the country's constitutional system and restricted church privileges with the Siccardi Laws, resolving difficult issues before handing over power to Kabul in 1852.
