A region in the northwest of North Rhine-Westphalia, in western Germany. It is one of the three regions occupied by the Saxons in the Middle Ages: Westphalia, Ostphalia, and Engeln. It first appeared in records in 775. It covers roughly the present-day Westphalia region plus the former Osnabrück district of Lower Saxony. Westphalia has lacked political unity since the Middle Ages, but it has retained a sense of community, which is reflected in the temperament, culture, religion, and social and political cohesion of its residents. For example, while Rhinelanders are open-minded and fickle, Westphalians are said to be taciturn, sluggish, and composed. It also has distinctive architectural styles. Currently, it forms the Westphalia-Lippe Regional Union with its mayor and council, and strives to preserve cultural assets, dialects, and customs, with its center in Münster.

history

In the early Middle Ages, it was a Saxon settlement along with Ostphalia, and after the 9th century it formed part of the Duchy of Saxony, including the area east of the Rhine up to the Weser. After the fall of Henry the Lion in 1180, it was divided into many ecclesiastical and secular territories, including the Duchy of Westphalia, the four bishoprics of Münster, Osnabrück, Paderborn and Minden, the counties of Ravensburg, Mark and Waldeck, and other small territories. Of these, the Duchy of Westphalia, despite its name, only included part of the Sauerland and was governed by the Archbishopric of Cologne (it was annexed to Hesse-Darmstadt in 1802). Since then, Westphalia has lacked political unity, and parts of it have become the territory of external powers, but it should be noted that a sense of community was fostered and maintained in the political and cultural aspects.

In modern times, after the Treaty of Tilsit (1807), Napoleon created the Kingdom of Westphalia (capital: Kassel) with part of Westphalia and the neighboring areas, and appointed his brother Jerome as king, and attempted to Frenchify the area through the implementation of the Napoleonic Code and other measures. In 1815, by decision of the Congress of Vienna, Prussia was given most of Westphalia and created a state there. In 1946, it was annexed with the northern part of the state of Rhine to form the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

ドイツ西部、ノルトライン・ウェストファーレン州の北西部の地方。英語名ウェストファリアWestphalia。中世にザクセン人が占拠した三つの地方ウェストファーレン、オストファーレン、エンゲルンの一つで、775年に初めて記録に現れる。ほぼ現在のウェストファーレン地方に、ニーダーザクセン州の旧オスナブリュック県を加えた範囲である。ウェストファーレンは中世以来、政治的統一を欠いたが、共同体意識は保持され、住民の気質、文化、宗教や、社会的、政治的結合にそれが表れている。たとえばラインラント人が開放的で移り気であるのに対し、ウェストファーレン人は寡黙、鈍重、沈着であるとされている。建築様式にも特色をもっている。現在リッペ地方とともにウェストファーレン・リッペ地方連合を形成し、その長と議会をもち、文化財、方言、慣習などの保存に努め、その中心はミュンスターにある。

歴史

中世初期にはオストファーレンとともにザクセン人の居住地で、9世紀以後ザクセン公国の一部を形成して、ライン川以東ウェーザー川に達する地域を含んでいた。1180年ハインリヒ獅子(しし)公の没落後、多くの教会領、世俗領に分裂し、ウェストファーレン公国、ミュンスター、オスナブリュック、パーダーボルン、ミンデンの4司教領、ラーフェンスブルク、マルク、ワルデック諸伯領その他小領邦が並存することになった。このうちウェストファーレン公国はその名称にもかかわらず、ザウアーラントの一部を含むにすぎず、ケルン大司教によって統治された（1802年ヘッセン・ダルムシュタットに併合）。以後ウェストファーレンは政治的統一を欠いたままであり、またその一部は外部勢力の領土となったが、地域的な共同体意識は、政治、文化の面ではぐくまれ維持されたことに注意しておかねばならない。

　近代に入って、ティルジット条約（1807）後、ナポレオンは、ウェストファリアの一部とそれに隣接する地域とでウェストファーレン王国（首都カッセル）をつくり、弟のジェロームを王として、ナポレオン法典の施行その他を通じてフランス化を図った。1815年ウィーン会議の決定によってプロイセンがウェストファーレンの大部分を与えられて、そこに一州をつくった。1946年ライン州北部と併合されて、ノルトライン・ウェストファーレン州に編成された。
