Born January 17, 1899 in Brooklyn, New York [Died] May 14, 1977, Santa Barbara American educator. Attended Oberlin College from 1915 to 1917. During World War I, volunteered at field hospitals in the United States and Italy. Graduated from Yale University in 1921 and from the law school in 1925. In 1927, at the age of 28, he became dean of Yale Law School, and in 1929, at the age of 30, he became president of the University of Chicago, a position he held until 1945. In 1943, he became chairman of the editorial board of the Encyclopedia Britannica, in 1951, vice-president of the Ford Foundation, and in 1954, he founded the Republic Endowment Foundation and became its president. He later headed the Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions. He criticized America's mechanical technological civilization and overly specialized vocational education, and advocated and practiced a new educational philosophy and method that valued classics. He was also known as a world federalist. His books include "The Higher Learning in America" (1936) and "Education for Freedom" (43).
