〘Noun〙① (Currently also called "sanpo") Three directions. Three areas. *Heike (early 13th century) 11 "As we approached Yoshito'o 's castle and looked, we saw that on three sides there was marsh, and on the other side a moat."② A square folding tray with a base with openwork holes on the front, left, right and right sides, called a "kurikata" or " ganzo ." Often made from plain cypress wood, it was used as a table for eating in the past, but later came to be used for offerings to gods, Buddhas and nobles, and for placing items during ceremonies. A type of weight . Sanpo. ※Sannai Koketsu (around 1579) "Board. (four sides and three sides). For ministers and above, it is four sides. For chief ministers and below, it is three sides." ※Haiku, Inukoshu (1633), vol. 1 "I have accumulated three sides, how can I not be in the west?" ③ In Japanese mathematics, it means an equilateral triangle. ※Tateiroku (1639), vol. 6 "Placing _two steps _is _one , using _two three sides of the square hook is the corresponding step method, five steps back gives _two _steps , _{so this} is using _two (hooks) and subtracting _one shaku, thus giving _two _shaku , which is (square hooks)." ④ In the early modern period, it was a general term for the middlemen who shipped rice from the storehouses in Osaka, the Shinchi Shigumi, the Furu Sangumi, and the Kamigumi. 〘名〙① (現在は「さんぽう」とも) 三つの方向。三つの方面。※平家（１３Ｃ前）一一「能遠(よしとを)が城におしよせて見れば、三方は沼、一方は堀なり」② 角形の折敷(おしき)に、前と左右との三方に「刳形(くりかた)」もしくは「眼象」と呼ばれる透かし穴のあいた台のついたもの。多く檜の白木で作られ、古くは食事をする台に用いたが、後には神仏や貴人へ物を供したり、儀式の時に物をのせるのに用いる。衝重(ついがさね)の一種。三宝。※三内口決（1579頃）「盤。〈四方三方事〉。大臣以上は四方。大納言以下は三方也」※俳諧・犬子集（1633）一「三方につみしをいかに西ざかな」③ 和算で、正三角形のこと。※竪亥録（1639）六「置_二歩数_一、用_二三方之方鈎相因之歩法_一、五帰而得_二歩数_一、於_レ是用_二〈鈎方〉之尺数_一帰除、則得_二尺数_一、是〈方鈎〉也」④ 近世、大坂の蔵屋敷米を出米する際の仲立人で新地四組・古三組・上組の総称。〔稲の穂（1842‐幕末頃）〕
