〘名〙① (現在は「さんぽう」とも) 三つの方向。三つの方面。※平家(13C前)一一「能遠(よしとを)が城におしよせて見れば、三方は沼、一方は堀なり」② 角形の折敷(おしき)に、前と左右との三方に「刳形(くりかた)」もしくは「眼象」と呼ばれる透かし穴のあいた台のついたもの。多く檜の白木で作られ、古くは食事をする台に用いたが、後には神仏や貴人へ物を供したり、儀式の時に物をのせるのに用いる。衝重(ついがさね)の一種。三宝。※三内口決(1579頃)「盤。〈四方三方事〉。大臣以上は四方。大納言以下は三方也」※俳諧・犬子集(1633)一「三方につみしをいかに西ざかな」③ 和算で、正三角形のこと。※竪亥録(1639)六「置二歩数一、用二三方之方鈎相因之歩法一、五帰而得二歩数一、於レ是用二〈鈎方〉之尺数一帰除、則得二尺数一、是〈方鈎〉也」④ 近世、大坂の蔵屋敷米を出米する際の仲立人で新地四組・古三組・上組の総称。〔稲の穂(1842‐幕末頃)〕
