Nikko Reihei-kaido Road

Nikko Reihei-kaido Road
During the Edo period, this was the road traveled by the Nikko Reiheishi. It is also simply called the Reiheishi Kaido. At Kuragano in Kozuke Province, it branched off from the Nakasen Road to the east, passed through Tamamura and Goryo, crossed the Tone River, passed through Shiba, Kizaki, and Ota, and entered Shimotsuke Province. It went east through Yagi, Yanada, Tenmyo, Inubushi, and Tomida, then went north through Tochigi, Kassenba, and Kanasaki, and joined the Mibu Road at Niregi (present-day Kanuma City). From here, it passed through Mibu Road and the Nikko Dochu before reaching Nikko, but in a broader sense, the Nikko Reiheishi Kaido was considered to extend to Imaichi on the Nikko Dochu. In 1646, the Imperial Court dispatched a messenger to the Toshogu Shrine Grand Festival on the anniversary of Tokugawa Ieyasu's death (April 17th), and the following year, this became a tradition, with a group of messengers passing through this road. In 1764, the road came under the jurisdiction of the road magistrate. From Imaichi, the road further connected to the Aizu Nishi Kaido, and it also served as a route for the distribution of goods between the Aizu region and Edo.
