…It should not be forgotten that there was a pioneering manifesto such as “The Auteurs” (No. 144 of “L’Eclin Français”). Bazin was particularly influential (he was the first to use the term “auteurism”), and he was a great father figure who nurtured the “New Wave” together with Henri Langlois (1914-77), the general director of the Cinémathèque Française, who showed films from around the world and throughout history and taught film history, Jean Renoir (Pierre Cast and Jacques Rivette were his assistant directors), who taught that “film is people,” and Roberto Rossellini, who read the screenplays of the young writers of the “New Wave” and gave them advice. The notable activity of the “Cahiers du Cinéma” group was their active collaboration in writing screenplays and in planning and producing films together, which is reminiscent of the Narutaki group in Japanese film history. …
