In Chinese, it is called Heilongjiang or Heihe. Mongolian name is Haramuren. The Argun River originating in the northwestern part of the Greater Khingan Range and the Shilka River originating from the Onon River (Mongolia) join together, flowing along the border between Northeast China and Russia, and emptying into the Tatar Strait at Nikolaevsk. It is 4,416 km long, and the drainage basin is mostly grassland and covers ^an area of 2 million km2. There are over 200 tributaries, including the Zeya, Bureya, Ussuri, and Songhua Rivers. Navigable from May to November. Along the coast, there are Blagoveshchensk and Khabarovsk. Along with the Trans-Siberian Railway, it is the most important transportation route in the Russian Far East. It is also rich in fish. The main stream in the middle reaches and the Ussuri River, a tributary, are international rivers and are bustling with traffic.

中国語では黒竜江，黒河。モンゴル名ハラムレン。大興安嶺北西部に発するアルグン川と，オノン川（モンゴル）を源とするシルカ川が合流し，中国東北地方とロシア国境を流れ，ニコラエフスクでタタール海峡に注ぐ。長さ4416km，流域は草原が多く200万km²に達する。ゼヤ，ブレヤ，ウスリー，松花江など支流は200を数える。５〜11月可航。沿岸には，ブラゴベシチェンスク，ハバロフスクなどがある。シベリア鉄道とともにロシア極東地方の最も重要な交通路である。魚族も豊富。中流部の本流，支流のウスリー川は国際河川で交通も盛ん。
