A village in Kamikita District, central Aomori Prefecture. Population 9,182 (1995). Most of the village area is made up of the mountainous area on the eastern slope of the northern Ou Mountains and the alluvial plateau in the northern part of Sanbongihara. It has long been known as a horse-breeding area, and before World War II, the village was used as land for the Army's War Horse Replacement Unit. After the war, the Sanbongihara National Reclamation Project was carried out on the site, and farmland was developed. Between 1963 and 1968, the prefectural Tenma Dam was constructed on the Tsubo River, which flows east through the center of the village, and the Tsubo River basin was opened up, leading to the creation of many pioneering settlements. Currently, there are many diversified farms that mainly grow rice, but also raise livestock and grow tobacco. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
