Located on the Hudson River in southeastern New York State, in the northeastern United States, this city is the home of the US Military Academy (established in 1802). Population: 8,105 (1980). During the War of Independence, a fort was built across the Hudson River to prevent the ingress of the British fleet (1778), and it has been a US military base ever since. George Washington considered this place to be a "key point for America," and established his headquarters here for four months from the end of 1779.
