...The active ingredient is a large amount of saponin, one of which is called smilacin after the name of the genus. A species of the Smilax genus from South America also contains medicinal saponin, called sarsaparilla, and is used as a diuretic. The Smilax genus (greenbrier or catbrier) is distributed throughout the world, mainly in tropical and subtropical regions, and contains about 350 species.
