1553?-1625 British translator. Born in London to an Italian refugee. Graduated from Oxford University. Serving at the royal court, he compiled an early Italian-English dictionary, but also translated Montaigne's "Essays" into English and published it as "Essays" (1603). It was hailed as a masterpiece and was effective in conveying the essence of humanism to Shakespeare and other British Renaissance writers and thinkers.
