British translator. Born in London to an Italian refugee. Graduated from Oxford University. Serving at the royal court, he compiled an early Italian-English dictionary, but also translated Montaigne's "Essays" into English and published it as "Essays" (1603). It was hailed as a masterpiece and was effective in conveying the essence of humanism to Shakespeare and other British Renaissance writers and thinkers. [Kawasaki Toshihiko]

イギリスの翻訳家。イタリア人の亡命者を父としてロンドンに生まれた。オックスフォード大学出身。宮廷に仕え，初期の伊英辞典も編纂したが，モンテーニュの《随想録》を英訳して，《エッセーズ》(1603)として出版した。名訳として世に迎えられ，シェークスピアはじめイギリス･ルネサンスの作家･思想家に，ヒューマニズムの真髄を伝えるのに力があった。【川崎寿彦】
