A floating aquatic fern of the Azollaceae family. The leaves are about 1.5 mm long. They are found from the southwestern part of Honshu to Okinawa. They grow on the water surface of ponds, swamps, rice fields, etc., and grow densely, turning the water surface deep red. Small leaves like those of cypress grow densely on branched stems. The leaves are divided into dorsal and ventral parts, and bear one large and one small sporangiocarp at the base. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
