In the same year, he built a horse-powered mill in Nottingham, and in 1871 a water-powered mill in Cromford. This is why Arkwright's spinning machine is called a water frame. The advent of the water frame made it possible to produce large quantities of thin, strong cotton yarn, which allowed the production of thin cotton cloth without the need for a cotton-linen weave (a weave in which linen yarn strong enough to withstand the loom is used for the warp and cotton for the weft).
