…German painter. His birthplace and early training are unknown. He lived in Regensburg from an early age, and spent the rest of his life there. His early works show the influence of Cranach and Dürer in the depictions of nature and people. He was a central painter of the Danube School, and played an extremely important role in the development of landscape art in its early stages. His View of the Donauwörth (Landscape with a Castle, c. 1528) is considered the first example in Europe of a pure oil landscape painting without figures, and shows an awakening of emotion toward nature itself. …
