Casablanca (English spelling)

Casablanca (English spelling)
In Arabic, it is called Ad-Dal al-Baydā, meaning "white house". It is a port city on the Atlantic coast of Morocco. Located between Rabat and Jadida, it is the largest city in Morocco, the No. 1 trading port, and the center of commerce and industry. The old city is near the port, originally inhabited by Arab residents, partially surrounded by a wall, and the white-walled houses create a maze-like streetscape. In recent years, most of the Jews in Casablanca live here. Outside the walls, the French built a town, and government offices, banks, hotels, and department stores are concentrated there. New Muslim residential areas are developing nearby. The origins of Casablanca are unclear, but it seems to have been a fishing village and a pirate base in the Middle Ages. In the late 18th century, Sultan Sidi Muhammad ibn Abdullah rebuilt the city, opened a port, and conducted trade. In 1907, it was occupied by France. During the early years of the French Protectorate (1912-56), Marshal L. Lloyote implemented a policy to develop Casablanca into the main port of Morocco. Today, about three-quarters of Morocco's trade passes through the port. Since 1923, phosphate rock has been the main export. Important industrial products include sugar, tobacco, cement, textiles, electronics, leather products, canned food, beer, and soft drinks. Carpets are a famous handicraft product. There is an international airport, and rail and road connections to the cities of Marrakech, Rabat, Tangier, and Fez. Population: 2,139,204 (1982 estimate).
