Tamakatsuma

Japanese: 玉勝間 - たまかつま
Tamakatsuma

This book, which could be called Motoori Norinaga's leisurely writings, consists of 14 volumes. He started writing in 1793 (Kansei 5) and gradually prepared for publication, but only the first 12 volumes were completed during Norinaga's lifetime. The dates of completion of volumes 13 and 14 are unclear. The first volume (volumes 1-3) was published in 1795, the second volume (volumes 4-6) in 1797, and the third volume (volumes 7-9) in 1799. The fourth volume (volumes 10-12) was published in 1802 (Kyowa 2) after Norinaga's death, and the fifth volume (volumes 13, 14, and one volume of the catalogue) in 1812 (Bunka 9). The contents are excerpts from old books, answers to questions from his students, dialects and geography, memories of his own academic studies, and notes on his academic studies, life, ideology, and beliefs as he looks back on his life.
