A genus of the Acanthaceae family, it is a perennial herb and shrub with about 300 species distributed in the tropics and subtropics of Southeast Asia, but it is sometimes subdivided into many genera. A typical cultivated species is Ulamurasaki, native to Myanmar. It is a small shrub about 1.5m tall with a square stem. It has opposite elliptical-lanceolate sessile leaves about 15cm long. The leaf surfaces are metallic purple with dark veins and purple-red on the underside. Upright spikes bear pale purple tubular flowers with five lobes. It is cultivated in greenhouses as an ornamental plant. It is propagated by cuttings and seeds.

キツネノマゴ科の一属で，約300種が東南アジアの熱帯・亜熱帯に分布する多年草，低木であるが，多くの属に細分されることもある。代表的な栽培種はミャンマー原産のウラムラサキ。高さ1.5mほどの小低木で茎は四角。長さ15cmくらいの楕円状披針形の無柄の葉を対生。葉面は金属光沢がある紫色で脈は濃色，裏面は紫紅色。直立した穂状花序に淡紫色の５裂した筒状花がつく。観葉植物として温室で栽培。さし木，実生(みしょう)でふやす。
