Florianópolis (English spelling)

Japanese: フロリアノポリス(英語表記)Florianópolis
Florianópolis (English spelling)
The capital of the state of Santa Catarina in southern Brazil. It is a port city on Santa Catarina Island in the Atlantic Ocean, about 480 km south-southwest of São Paulo, and is connected to the mainland by a suspension bridge across a narrow channel. In 1542, the Spanish built the first European settlement on the island and took possession of it, but in 1675 it became Portuguese territory. The current city began as a settlement built in 1700 and was originally called Desterro. In 1893, it was occupied by rebel forces against Brazilian President Floriano Peixoto, but the rebellion was soon put down and the city was renamed after the president. It is the commercial center of the state, and industries such as metals, electrical equipment, pharmaceuticals, and plastics are carried out. The city center is a port and commercial district, and modern residential areas spread out on the hillsides around it. It is the location of the Federal University of Santa Catarina (1960). It is connected by road to major coastal cities on the mainland, such as Blumenau and Joinville. Population: 254,944 (1991 estimate).
