Bhāgavata Purāṇa

Japanese: バーガバタ･プラーナ（英語表記）Bhāgavata Purāṇa

This Purana is considered the holy scripture of the Bhagavata sect of Hindu Vaishnavaism. Although it was compiled late (around the 10th century), it is the most widely read and worshipped of the 18 major Puranas. It consists of 12 volumes and about 1,800 verses, and its style and wording imitate Kabya (a Sanskrit aesthetic style). Volume 10 of the Purana describes in detail the love between Krishna, the incarnation of Vishnu, and the cowherd girls (gopis) and his lover Radha, and it captures the human heart by alluding to the relationship between gods and humans. It is widely read by other Hindus across sects.

ヒンドゥー教ビシュヌ派の一派バーガバタ派の聖典とされるプラーナで，成立年代は遅いが(10世紀ころ)，18大プラーナの中で最も普及し，信仰を集めている。12巻約1800の詩節から成り，文体，措辞はカービヤ(サンスクリット美文体)文学を模倣している。全巻中第10巻はビシュヌの権化クリシュナと牛飼女(ゴーピー)たちや恋人ラーダーとの愛が詳細に描かれ，神と人間との関係を暗示して人心を把握し，宗派を超えて他のヒンドゥー教徒も広く愛読している。
