A phenomenon in which short wavelength colors such as blue and green appear brighter and long wavelength colors such as red appear darker when it gets dark. For example, the green of plants appears brighter at twilight. It was first described by JE Purkinje of Czechoslovakia. It occurs when the activity of the cones, which are highly sensitive to long wavelength light, becomes weaker and the activity of the rods, which are highly sensitive to short wavelength light, becomes stronger.
