A city in southern Gunma Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1900. It occupies the basin of the Tone River and the Karasu River, includes the area at the southern foot of Mt. Haruna, and borders Maebashi City to the east and Annaka City to the west. The city center has been a key transportation point since ancient times, and in the Middle Ages it was a post station on the Kamakura Kaido road, and in the early modern period it was the junction of the Nakasendo and Mikuni Kaido roads. During the Keicho era, the Ii clan built a castle here, and it developed into a castle town and a distribution center for goods. After the Meiji era, it became the largest transportation hub in northern Kanto, with the Takasaki Line, Ryomo Line, Shinetsu Main Line, Joetsu Line, Hachiko Line, Joetsu Shinkansen, and Joshin Electric Railway passing through it. It is also connected by the Kan'etsu Expressway and National Routes 17 and 18. Since the Meiji era, it has developed into the transportation and commercial center of the prefecture, in contrast to Maebashi, which became the prefectural capital, and in 1967, the first wholesale commercial complex in the country was built here. Industry is also thriving, with many industrial parks being built, and in addition to flour milling and paperboard manufacturing, electrical machinery and equipment, machinery, chemicals, steel, metals and other industries are being carried out, with the Kuragano area also becoming a prominent industrial area. The value of manufactured goods shipped was 679.6 billion yen (2003), ranking third in the prefecture. Rural areas produce rice, wheat, pears and peaches. The city is home to the Daruma Temple, famous for its Daruma Market, the Yamanoue Monument and Ancient Tomb (special historic site), the Kanaizawa Monument (special historic site), many other ancient tombs and the White Robe Kannon. In January 2006, Gunma County's Minago Town, Gunma Town, Kurabuchi Village and Tano County's Shinmachi were incorporated, in October 2006, Gunma County's Haruna Town was incorporated, and in June 2009, Tano County's Yoshii Town was incorporated. 群馬県南部の市。1900年市制。利根川,烏川などの流域を占め,榛名山南麓一帯を含み,東は前橋市,西は安中市に接する。中心市街は古来交通要地で,中世は鎌倉街道の宿駅,近世は中山道と三国街道の分岐点であった。慶長年間井伊氏が築城し,以降城下町,物資集散地として発展。明治以後高崎線,両毛線,信越本線,上越線,八高線,上越新幹線,上信電鉄が通じ,北関東最大の交通の要衝となった。関越自動車道,国道17,18号線も通じる。明治以降は,県庁所在地となった前橋に対して,県の交通,商業の中心として発展し,1967年には全国初の卸商業団地が造成された。また工業も盛んで,多くの工業団地が造成され,製粉,板紙製造のほか電気機械器具,機械,化学,鉄鋼,金属などの工業が行われ,倉賀野地区も工業地化が著しい。製造品出荷額では6796億円(2003)を上げ,県内3位を占めている。農村部では米麦,ナシ,モモを産する。だるま市で有名な達磨(だるま)寺,山上碑および古墳(特別史跡),金井沢碑(特別史跡),ほか多くの古墳群,白衣観音がある。2006年1月群馬郡箕郷町,群馬町,倉渕村,多野郡新町を,2006年10月,群馬郡榛名町を,2009年6月多野郡吉井町を編入。東日本大震災で,市内において被害が発生。459.16km2。37万1302人(2010)。 →関連項目安中[市]|板鼻|岩鼻|前橋[市] 出典 株式会社平凡社百科事典マイペディアについて 情報 |
