… (Post-marriage) residence rules are about where married couples live after marriage. They include (1) virilocal, where the husband lives with his parents or in their neighborhood; (2) uxorilocal, where the wife lives with her parents; (3) ambilocal, where the husband or wife chooses whichever is more convenient; (4) neolocal, where the wife lives away from their parents' homes; (5) avunculocal, where the husband lives with his mother's uncle; and (6) duolocal, where the husband and wife do not live together. In the past, (1) was also called patrilocal, (2) matrilocal, and (3) bilocal. There is a strong relationship between residence style and descent, but even in patrilineal descent, there is patrilocal as well as uxorilocal, and in matrilineal descent, there are societies that adopt all of these types of styles. …
