… Helicopters with two rotors were subsequently significantly improved by L. Breguet of France and H. Focke of Germany, and in 1937 Focke produced the Focke-Achgelis Fw 61 helicopter, which recorded an airtime of 1 hour, 20 minutes, and 49 seconds after improvements, becoming the first practical helicopter. Igor Ivan Sikorsky (1889-1972), an American of Russian birth, also initially attempted a twin rotor, but in 1940 he succeeded in free flight with a single rotor aircraft called the VS300, and the following year set a flight record of 1 hour, 32 minutes, breaking the record of the Fw 61. This aircraft had almost perfect flight performance, including hovering, and although it initially had three tail rotors, this was later reduced to one, becoming the basic type of helicopter seen today. …
