Also known as Purkinje, he was a Czechoslovakian anatomist, histologist, embryologist, and physiologist who made groundbreaking achievements in all these fields. He was born in Libochovice, Bohemia. He studied at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Prague, where he received his doctorate in 1819 and became assistant professor of anatomy and physiology. In 1823, he became professor of physiology and pathology at the University of Breslau. In 1850, he returned to Prague and became professor of physiology, a position he held until his death. His major achievements include the discovery of the nucleus in the human nerve cell (1836), the proposal of the cell theory (1837), two years before T. Schwann, the discovery of ciliary movement (1835), the discovery of the bird blastocyst, the description of the fine structure of various parts of the human body, the first use of a microtome, and the discovery of Purkinje cells in the cerebellar cortex.

プルキニェともいう。チェコスロバキアの解剖学者,組織学者,発生学者,そして生理学者で,これらの諸方面において画期的な業績をあげた。生れはボヘミアのリボホビッツェ。プラハ大学医学部で学び,1819年学位を受けるとともに同大学解剖・生理学助手となり,23年ブレスラウ大学の生理・病理学教授となる。50年プラハにもどり,生理学の教授となり,死ぬまでその職にあった。おもな業績としては,人の神経細胞に核を発見(1836),T.シュワンより2年早く細胞説を提唱(1837),繊毛運動の発見(1835),鳥の胚盤胞の発見,人体各部の微細構造の記載,ミクロトームの最初の使用,小脳皮質内のプルキンエ細胞の発見などがある。
