1787‐1869 Also known as Purkinje, he was a Czechoslovakian anatomist, histologist, embryologist, and physiologist who made groundbreaking achievements in all these fields. He was born in Libochovice, Bohemia. He studied at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Prague, where he received his doctorate in 1819 and became assistant professor of anatomy and physiology. In 1823, he became professor of physiology and pathology at the University of Breslau. In 1850, he returned to Prague and became professor of physiology, a position he held until his death. His major achievements include the discovery of the nucleus in the human nerve cell (1836), the proposal of the cell theory (1837), two years before T. Schwann, the discovery of ciliary movement (1835), the discovery of the bird blastocyst, the description of the fine structure of various parts of the human body, the first use of a microtome, and the discovery of Purkinje cells in the cerebellar cortex.
