A city in the northeast of Saxony-Anhalt, northeast Germany. From 1949 to 1990 it was part of the former East Germany. Located at the northwest foot of the Flaming Hills, which are made up of moraine, it developed as the first outpost of the Archbishop of Magdeburg. Population 23,000 (2000). In addition to the textile industry run by refugees from France and other countries, the city is home to industries in food, leather, furniture, iron, machinery, steel rolling, tinplate, special steel, alloys, and stainless steel.
