社会変革，社会改革を行うにあたり，急進的，過激的方法を排除して一歩一歩前進する方法に立脚する思想や行動をいう。急進主義に対する。通常，社会変革や改革に直面したとき，いかなる時代，いかなる政治状況においても，急進的，革命的方法によって行おうとする陣営と漸進的，改良的方法によって行おうとする陣営とに分れることが多い。急進的方法は，それによってその後起る反動を理解しえない傾向が強く，漸進的方法は現状追随主義に陥る傾向があるといえる。しかし政治的，社会的権利が国民に保障され，社会が安定している時代には，急進的方法は国民によって嫌悪されることが多く，したがって，現代の欧米諸国の革新政党は，変革や改革の方法として，漸進主義をその党是としているのが普通である。
