Moschos (English spelling)

Date of birth and death unknown. Ancient Greek pastoral poet. 2nd century BC. Born in Syracuse, Sicily. His representative work, "Europa," is an elegant work that takes up the myth of Zeus, who transformed into a bull, seducing the beautiful Europa and crossing the sea with her on his back. Other works include "Eros on the Run," in which the goddess Aphrodite searches for her son Eros, and "Megara," in which Megara, wife of Hercules, laments the hero's fate with her mother-in-law Alcmene. His works are characterized by their skillful structure and gorgeous verse.

生没年不詳。古代ギリシアの牧歌詩人。紀元前2世紀の人。シチリア島のシラクサ出身。代表作『エウロパ』は、雄牛に姿を変えたゼウスが美女エウロパ（エウロペ）を誘惑し、彼女を背に海を越える神話を取り上げた優美な作品である。さらに、女神アフロディテが息子のエロスを探す『逃げ出したエロス』、ヘラクレスの妻メガラが姑(しゅうとめ)のアルクメネとともに英雄の運命について嘆く『メガラ』などがある。彼の作品の特色は技巧的な構成や華麗な詩句にみられる。
